No Main Topic 003: On Packing, Autumn, Pho & Clam Chowder.

Been somewhat MIA from the computer the past couple of days; I've been busy trying to sort out what things to pack for the road trip back up to Washington State. Plans are to leave sometime mid-next week so the deadline is looming. I don't see myself coming back to the Midwest until next year so I need to make some wise decisions with regards to packing. Oh yeah: add Veronica, her car seat and big-ass bag to the mix and my options decrease. But jackets and sweaters are definitely coming with me 'cause --

It's officially the first day of Autumn! I can't say I haven't been looking forward to cooler weather; after I got back from Mexico that was it for me. I had fun sweating it out on the beach, but it's time to rock some scarves :) There were a couple of cool, rainy days before I left Kansas City last week, so I took advantage and had some pho at Vietnam Cafe and other weather-appropriate meals. Ahhhh so good. There's not much in the way of Asian cuisine here in Hays, but that'll make going out to eat in Seattle that much more satisfying.

Plus there's Ivar's to anticipate. Clam chowder FTW!

Also need to upload some photos of my last days in Kansas City to my Flickr account; be on the lookout for those.

Twenty-Three Days.

It's no secret that fall is my favorite season, what with scarves and other cool-weather accessories rejoining the rest of my wardrobe. As much as I'm looking forward to the turning of the seasons, this summer has been a productive and busy one so far, and I'm planning on maximizing the potential of the three remaining weeks. The end of summer will coincide roughly with the completion of my MRI preceptorship here in Kansas City, wrapping up a major chapter in my life and starting a fresh one. Time really is beginning to fly now; I can count the work hours I have left at the hospital. Strange how being able to see the end of a journey changes the journey itself.
No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.
- John Donne
Autumn officially kicks off on 23 September. Wishful thinking, but hopefully the tan I just got will last me until long after fall ends. On the other hand, maybe I'll be too busy to notice.

A Change Is Gonna Come.

Word to Sam Cooke.

Nah, I'm not talking about civil rights or politics (although reading about the latter topic is has been giving me high blood pressure) ... but hairstyles.

My haircut of choice over the last few years had usually consisted of taking some clippers equipped with a #2 blade to my entire head, resulting in a low-maintenance 'do that didn't look too bad. I'd grow it out a little every now and then, just long enough to spike and add a bit of personality, but for the most part it was short and very manageable. Plus -- and this was a big plus -- all my hats/caps fit perfectly. Everything was on point.

Earlier this year I felt I needed some kind of change (word to Obama), and decided to experiment a little. I wanted to emulate a longer style popularized by my brothers across the Pacific, so I've been growing my hair out since about mid-March. Currently it's the longest it's been since about 1997. Needless to say, right now it looks Pretty Damn Fobulous. (But rest assured, I do not want X-Treme Korean Boy Band Hair.)

However this doesn't quite live up to my goal of having Bruce-like hair:

Trust: the man had style. I have ... fobby hair. Plus, my headwear doesn't quite feel right anymore on my dome ever since I started this project -- and it's getting colder out so I know I'm gonna start missin' my lids. So, is there some secret that I have to be in on to achieve this type of style correctly? *shrugs* I'll let it go for a couple more weeks to see if the situation improves. If not, out comes the #2 blade and it's back to short and spiky for me.

Scarf Weather.

Today, if you hadn't been aware, is the Autumnal Equinox, signifying that the night and day are about equally long. Also known as the First Day of Autumn -- my absolute favorite season -- this event can only mean one thing:

SCARF WEATHER IS FINALLY UPON US! *cue trumpets*

Hollaaaaaa!! Very soon it'll be time to break out the knit caps, hoodies, light jackets, sweaters and other clothing layers. About time too ... I was getting tired of coming out of work to find that my car had mysteriously transformed into an oven, and having my clothes stick to me at inopportune times. Seeing as I hate sweating when I'm not supposed to be sweating (and I perspire very easily), the change to cooler weather will be welcomed with open arms.

I haven't really been clothes shopping much since I went back to school almost two years ago; I relegated shopping to every few months and hit up consignment stores when I did go. I'd never paid them much notice before, and I'm kinda mad at myself now for not doing so then. When Gen lived there a few years ago, she upped me on consignment shopping during one of my visits and it was like I damn near experienced Retail Enlightenment. I mean how are you gonna pass up perfectly-fitting designer denim for about $20-40?

You can't. (If you can, your will is definitely stronger than mine.)

Not that I ever used to buy cheap stuff, but since I started consignment shopping I've been retro-fitting my wardrobe with some choice apparel. Yeah I'm buying fewer things now, but that only means that I'm more careful with choosing the items I end up purchasing and taking home. I like to think that my "look" has been narrowed down and upgraded as a result. WIN!

So here's to cooler, more comfortable weather! And best believe: I got my scarves on deck.

Summer Slackin'.

Here's a friendly reminder from our friends at someecards.com as you head into the three-day weekend.

Hmm, let's see ... I meant to do the following this summer:
  • spend more time outdoors
  • go to more concerts/shows
  • establish anything resembling a consistent workout routine
  • write/read more (outside of classwork)
  • attend any events sponsored by this organization
You could say I didn't ... quite ... get around to much of that *pulls out Lazy Student Excuse*.  Ah well.  The year's nowhere close to being finished, so it's not too late yet!  Plus my favorite season is coming soon and that actually has me excited.

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Weather Or Not.

Been crazy slacking this month with posts, so I want to get at least another one down before the month ends. Is May over already?

Although I've lived here for a year and a half now, I keep forgetting about the spring weather in the Midwest. One day it can be in the mid-50s and cloudy, then jump up to a blazing 90 the next -- causing havoc in closets and dressers everywhere. You have to pay close attention to the day's forecast* if you want to be anywhere close to dressing comfortably -- there's little room for error.

There are only three weeks left until the official start of summer on 21 June. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I do love warm weather and all the outdoor activities that become available (swimming, jogging, mugging people, etc.). So in the next few weeks I plan on soaking up some Vitamin Diesel and getting a little color before Jose refers again to me being a lovely blinding shade of "office pale". Besides I've been cooped up in the hospital too long; it's good to have a change of scenery after work that doesn't involve staring at some kind of screen. Word to Hulu.

On the other hand, I hate dressing for summer. As the temperature goes up, guys become severely limited to the type of clothes they can wear (shorts and a t-shirt with sneaks or flip-flops), whereas women still have a variety of combos to pick from (shorts, skirts and dresses paired with an endless selection of tops and footwear). I'm not the most fashion-forward cat around, but I much prefer fall attire over summer gear. I'm talking light jackets/hoodies, scarves, a fitted tee, a good pair of jeans, and kicks that don't look like a Technicolor muppet threw up on them. Word to Tim Gunn.

Obviously this option's not quite realistic when it's 80+ outside, so I'll be content with the cargo shorts and the flippy-floppies (word to Andy Samberg). After all, the summer fashion philosophy for guys consists largely of comfort over style. I can definitely get with that, and will enjoy the summer months nearly upon us ... but when the weather gets a little cooler, best believe my Scarf Game will be strong.

*I've stopped paying any attention whatsoever to the extended forecast. The weather's just been too unpredictable lately to bother planning what to wear even two days out. Now I just wake up, check the temperature for the day and look out the window to see if it's raining. (Well, not that it really matters much 'cause I rock scrubs 40 hours a week. Hunter green ones at that.)
